Mission
An educated citizenry is essential to maintain the health of critical Northwest habitats, regional watersheds and mountain ecosystems. At North Cascades Institute (NCI) we believe that education combined with direct experience is a vital tool to protect and restore the natural environments of the Pacific Northwest. Since 1986 the Institute has provided leadership and excellence in field based, environmental education. We help people learn about, appreciate, and care for the natural and cultural landscapes of the Pacific Northwest. NCI is committed to creating a sense of wonder and place through rigorous educational programs for all ages. We promote community education, involvement and stewardship with an emphasis on biological diversity and the natural and cultural history of mountain ecosystems, watersheds and wildlands. North Cascades Institute seeks to create an engaged and ecologically literate public in the Pacific Northwest - one that speaks responsibly for the landscape of home.
Primary Programs/Projects
NCI offers a wide range of environmental education programs about Reason for Participating on the Skagit Watershed Council: the natural and cultural history of the North Cascades region. In particular we focus on the Skagit Watershed. Current programs include: Watershed Education, Natural History Field Seminars, Teacher Training, School Programs (Mountain School), summer Mountain Camp for youth, Curriculum Development and Educational Materials (publications, video), Volunteer Training, Elderhostel, Community Outreach, Custom Workshops and Consulting, and Research and Monitoring.
Reason for Participating on the Skagit Watershed Council
We care deeply about this place - the Skagit Watershed. It is home to many of our programs, participants and staff. The health of this river system is also critical as it is one of the most important regional watersheds in the Pacific Northwest. NCI will learn from the other members of the Council about a wide range of watershed-related issues. Many of these topics can be integrated into our existing educational programs. The Institute gains from being a member of the discussion, from raising issues at this table that are important to us, and for working with like-minded partners to preserve the values and health of the river system. We hope to provide a voice for education and community outreach on the Council.
