Mission
People for Puget Sound (PFPS) is a non-profit citizens' organization launched in December 1991. Its mission is to protect and restore Puget Sound's waters, land and common future. Its goals are to eliminate contamination of the Sound and Straits, to halt the destruction of natural habitats of the Sound and Straits, and to sustain the Sound and Straits as a healthy source of people's livelihood, enjoyment and renewal.
Primary Programs/Projects
Scientific research and studies, restoration and enhancement projects, public outreach and education on scientific information, conservation and restoration issues, and Puget Sound related activities. This communication with the public occurs through the "Sound and Straits" newsletter and through scientific and position papers and other publications, lectures and other programs, and a Kids For Puget Sound education and activity program that has breadth, depth and scientific validity. PFPS also conducts beach walks and mounts special public events, some free, some as fund-raisers to support the organization's work. Two specific examples of PFPS programs/projects: Puget Sound Kids' Day, '97, October 18, Sound wide: sixth annual celebration of what young people are doing around the Sound to keep its waters safe and healthy. PFPS also partners with other entities, such as the Swinomish Tribal Community, on restoration and enhancement projects. An up-to-date calendar of events is available on SoundWeb, the PFPS web page, www.pugetsound.org.
Reason for Participating on the Skagit Watershed Council
PFPS hopes to achieve from this process increased scientific knowledge, understanding, and cooperation among diverse interest groups, leading to healthier fish-bearing waters, from the Skagit to the Puget Sound and its associated waters. We hope that the Skagit Watershed Council will be so successful in achieving its goal that it will be emulated by other watershed councils around the Puget Sound, with the ultimate result of the return of a robust fish population in the Puget Sound Basin.
